Cosmic Commune Cocktail/Mocktail

Rachel Budde, the founder of Fat and The Moon created a Cosmic Commune Cocktail/Mocktail to enjoy as you vote!
A centering bev for when celestial beings on the fritz, gets personal. Hawthorn berry (Crataegus monogyna) is the star herb in this tonic. The energetics of Hawthorn evoke the powers of the heart, and aids us in staying spacious and nimble. The berries of Hawthorn physiologically support the good functioning of the heart. Did you know that proper heart pumping is KEY in the assimilation of nutrients from our food? Strengthening the heart literally helps us take in the things we need. So don’t skip a beat! Hawthorn berries are in season, go out and meet this lover of a plant.

What to gather for your potion:

Get Equipped:

  • Fav non-reactive pot with lid
  • Wooden spoon
  • Bottle for bottling
  • A large fine mesh sieve
  • Cheesecloth
  • Blender
  • Spatula (to get every last bit)

The Ingredients:

  • 2 cups water
  • 1/2 cup hawthorn berries (dried or fresh)
  • 1 tablespoon whole cardamom pods
  • 1 orange sliced (with rind)
  • 2 whole clove buds
  • 1 ½ cups honey (or another liquid sweetener) more or less to taste

Instructions:

Add all of the herbs into the water, cover with lid and bring to a simmer for a good 30 minutes. Turn off the heat and let cool down until it just warm.

At this point, you can either strain out the herbs, or, if you’re after a stronger brew, add the mixture to a blender (my personal preference). After the herbs have liquified in the blender, strain out the solids through a fine sieve OR a sieve lined with cheesecloth.

Take the remaining tea and add equal parts honey. Note if you are not using honey: other sweeteners have varying levels of sweetness, so taste test for what suits you.

Bottle up your sweet brew. This herbal syrup will keep in the fridge for a good month. You can add a little splash of brandy or vodka to extend the shelf life another month.

For the Cosmic Commune (M)Cocktail:

Cold: To enliven and refresh
Add a generous dash of your herbal syrup to a glass, then fill with chilled seltzer. Stir. Add a fresh slice of orange, and the teenyist pinch of clove powder for garnish.

Warm: To nourish and soothe
Warm up a little apple cider with a splash of water and add a tablespoon of Hawthorn syrup. The sweetness of this brew will depend on your taste, you can play with adding more or less water, or more or less syrup. Not a cider person? Whisk in a teaspoon of unsweetened cocoa powder to a cup of milk of choice and warm, then add your Hawthorn syrup.
